Nebraska state board of education has recently passed a new dress code and grooming policy for public schools, effective from the 2025-26 school year. The move was prompted by new legislation intended to protect students from discrimination based on their attire and hair, in accordance with their religious or cultural beliefs. The policy prohibits schools from enforcing any dress code that discriminates against students on the basis of race, national origin or religion, and also covers protective hairstyles such as braids, locks, twists, and afros. However, concerns have been raised about potential discrimination and the need for clearer guidelines in enforcing the policy. This decision comes after a recent lawsuit in which a school employee cut a Lakota family's children's hair without their consent and against their religious beliefs.
