A Delhi court has sentenced activist Medha Patkar to five months imprisonment and a fine of Rs 10 lakh in a 23-year-old criminal defamation case filed against her by former Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. The case dates back to 2001 when Saxena had filed a defamation suit against Patkar for allegedly issuing a press notice against him. The court observed that Patkar's remarks were inflammatory and intended to provoke public outrage against Saxena, causing irreparable damage to his public image. Patkar's counsel argued that there was no proof that the press note was sent by her and the matter is expected to be appealed.
