Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the life and achievements of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday in January, which this year falls on King’s actual birthday, January 15. The holiday was established in 1986, though it took until 2000 before it was recognized in every state. MLK Day is one of several holidays where the date changes each year in accordance the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, a law passed in 1968 to increase the number of three-day weekends for government workers.
