Currently, grains travel from FCI godowns to Supplyco warehouses before reaching ration shops, causing the state to spend a whopping Rs. 300 crore annually. In a meeting with the Delhi State Civil Supplies Corporation, Food and Supplies Minister Imran Hussain warned of strict action against transporters who deliberately delay ration supply. He also instructed that all ration trucks must use GPS tracking devices and be covered with waterproof tarpaulin during the rainy season. In Alappuzha, a dispute between a contractor and head-loaders caused a delay of five days in the distribution of food grains meant for ration. The head-loaders demanded additional payment for unloading the Taurus lorries, which can carry more than 300 sacks, while the contractor refused to pay. As a result, 1,000 sacks of food grains were abandoned in the lorries. The head-loaders argued that they had been receiving extra pay for this job for the past five years.
The Telangana state government has started the process of verifying and identifying eligible families for new ration cards under the 'Praja Palana' drive. The new cards will also entitle beneficiaries to the government's six guarantees, including free electricity and increased health coverage.
