Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has announced plans to replace batteries and power plants in base tower stations (BTS) in Karnataka in order to address mobile network disruption issues during power outages. The company has already replaced 150 batteries out of 450 in Dakshina Kannada Telecom District (DKTD), with the remaining to be replaced within a year. In addition, 62 new BTS sites will have solar panels to charge batteries and 93 new sites will be added to cover 173 remote villages in the region. BSNL is also working to upgrade its copper-wire network to optical-fibre cable across Karnataka, with 850 new towers planned and 500 already completed.
BSNL has recently upgraded its budget broadband plan, making it more attractive for subscribers. The Rs 599 plan now offers 100Mbps of speed and 4TB of monthly data, with a reduced speed of 4Mbps after consumption of the allocated data. BSNL is also set to launch its 'Made in India' 4G service in August, with testing conducted on the 700 MHz and 2100 MHz spectrum bands. The service, built on indigenous technology and in partnership with TCS and C-Dot, has already attracted 8 lakh new users.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticized the Congress party for the decline of public sector undertakings like BSNL, MTNL, HAL, and Air India during their tenure. He highlighted the efforts made by the current government to revive and improve these PSUs, including BSNL's progress towards 4G and 5G technology and HAL's record revenue generation. Modi also mentioned the government's plans to improve public transportation, including the introduction of Bullet Trains and expansion of the Vande Bharat train.
In his reply to the debate in Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi accused the Congress of destroying PSUs like BSNL, MTNL, HAL and Air India during their tenure. He highlighted how these PSUs are now showing record revenue generation and growth under the current government. PM Modi also contrasted the "policy paralysis" during Congress' rule with India's consistent presence among the top five economies globally under the NDA government. He also emphasized the success of the 'Sabka Saath Sabka Vikaas' motto and called out Congress for giving long speeches on economic policies.
