ITI Ltd, one of India's leading telecom manufacturing companies, has been chosen as the L1 bidder for the prestigious Rs 3,022 crore BharatNet Phase-3 Project by the government. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. (BSNL) has announced plans to replace batteries and power plants in base tower stations (BTS) in Karnataka in order to address mobile network disruption issues during power outages. The company has already replaced 150 batteries out of 450 in Dakshina Kannada Telecom District (DKTD), with the remaining to be replaced within a year. In addition, 62 new BTS sites will have solar panels to charge batteries and 93 new sites will be added to cover 173 remote villages in the region. BSNL is also working to upgrade its copper-wire network to optical-fibre cable across Karnataka, with 850 new towers planned and 500 already completed.
BSNL has recently upgraded its budget broadband plan, making it more attractive for subscribers. The Rs 599 plan now offers 100Mbps of speed and 4TB of monthly data, with a reduced speed of 4Mbps after consumption of the allocated data. BSNL is also set to launch its 'Made in India' 4G service in August, with testing conducted on the 700 MHz and 2100 MHz spectrum bands. The service, built on indigenous technology and in partnership with TCS and C-Dot, has already attracted 8 lakh new users.
