Chhoti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi, is a holy festival celebrated on the Chaturdashi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. This year, it falls on October 31st, but there is confusion surrounding the date with some celebrating it on October 30th. Naraka Chaturdashi: A Festival of Victory and Spiritual Renewal
Background
Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Chhoti Diwali, is a Hindu festival celebrated on the fourteenth day (Chaturdashi) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Kartik (October-November). It falls just a day before Diwali, the festival of lights.
The festival commemorates Lord Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura. According to legend, Narakasura kidnapped 16,000 princesses and imprisoned them in his kingdom. Lord Krishna, along with his consort Satyabhama, fought a fierce battle against Narakasura and ultimately defeated him.
Naraka Chaturdashi also marks the beginning of the festivities leading up to Diwali. It is believed that the oil bath taken before daybreak on this day symbolizes the cleansing of sins and the triumph of good over evil.
Celebration
Naraka Chaturdashi is celebrated with great enthusiasm across India. People wake up before sunrise and take an oil bath. They then perform special prayers to Lord Krishna and Goddess Lakshmi.
Diyas (earthen lamps) are lit in rows to light up homes and temples. People exchange sweets and gifts with family and friends. In some parts of India, effigies of Narakasura are burnt to symbolize the destruction of evil.
Significance
Naraka Chaturdashi has several religious and spiritual significances:
